Abstract

The concept of the "Global South" has emerged as a key term in contemporary international relations, reflecting the evolution of North-South dynamics and the growing importance of developing countries on the world stage. This research focuses on analyzing the origins and evolution of the concept of the Global South, examining its current meaning and implications for contemporary international relations. The study reveals that the term emerged as an alternative to previous categorizations such as "Third World" or "developing countries," gaining prominence in the 1980s. Its roots trace back to the Non-Aligned Movement and dependency theories. The research shows how the concept has evolved from a simple geographic designation to a more complex framework encompassing political, economic, and cultural dimensions. The main findings indicate that the Global South has provided a framework for solidarity and collective action among countries that share historical experiences of colonialism and contemporary development challenges. It has significantly influenced development policies, fostering South-South cooperation and questioning traditional development models. In conclusion, the Global South represents more than a geographic category; it encapsulates a complex network of historical, economic, and political relationships. Its evolution reflects changes in the world order, challenging traditional power structures and providing a framework for rethinking international relations from the perspective of countries historically marginalized in the global system.
