Distal radius fractures (DRF) account for 17.5% of all fractures,1 and the most common fracture in trauma services worldwide is the distal radius fracture (DRF), which accounts for 15% of upper body trauma interventions. Distal radius fractures can be treated conservatively or surgically depending on several parameters; however, there is still controversy regarding the optimal treatment for these injuries. Objective: To determine the most effective surgical management with the lowest complication rate for the treatment of distal radius fractures at the Central Teaching University Hospital of the Armed Forces. Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional, prospective study was conducted. Results: Distal radius fractures are most prevalent in children under 19 years of age (34%) and in males (73%). Fifty-three percent were due to traffic accidents. The affected limb was the left (53%). Closed fractures predominated in 80% of cases, and 2R3A2 fractures in 43%. Plates were used in 60%. Ulnar styloid fractures were present in 40%. There were no complications in 60%. Functionally, 41% had no disability, and 60% reported no pain. It was determined that plates provided better results in terms of functionality and residual pain. Conclusions: When evaluating the different treatments used, it was concluded that the most beneficial approach for patients with distal radius fractures is the plate approach followed by Kirschner, as they achieve good outcomes on pain and functional scales.
