Strategy to Improve oral hygiene knowledge among orthodontic patients.

Abstract

The general objective of this study was to design a strategy to improve oral hygiene knowledge among orthodontic patients treated at the Specialty Clinic of the Central Eastern University. A methodology based on a mixed-methods approach was employed, with a descriptive, non-experimental, cross-sectional design. The population consisted of patients undergoing active orthodontic treatment, and a sample was selected through non-probability convenience sampling. Data were collected through the analysis of clinical records and the application of structured instruments to determine the level of knowledge and practices related to oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment. The results revealed that, although patients maintained an adequate toothbrushing frequency, there were deficiencies in the execution of specific oral hygiene techniques, the use of auxiliary hygiene devices, and the identification of complications associated with poor oral hygiene. Furthermore, the presence of dental plaque and gingival inflammation was observed in a significant portion of the study population, highlighting the need to strengthen patient education on self-care practices. It was concluded that the theoretical framework supports the importance of oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment and that the patients’ level of knowledge was insufficient. A comprehensive educational strategy was designed, structured around theoretical and practical activities, digital follow-up, and continuous evaluation. This strategy was positively validated by experts for its relevance and clinical applicability.
